Garments made from flat pieces of fabric that are draped and tucked to fit the body and provide visual interest have been the basis of clothing for many cultures throughout history. Designers have used these garments, and the basic shapes of flat fabric, as inspiration for many of fashions most iconic looks.
Learn the basics of draping simple fabric shapes around your body to create one-of-a-kind pieces that work with the drape and fall of the fabric, and your body shape.
We’ll explore the different shapes and cuts, and the types of garments that can be made with them, and the most common finishing techniques used on flat fabric draped garments.
Students will then drape and make their own garment based on one of four classic flat-fabric draped styles: the rectangular shift dress or top; the straight or bias sarong skirt; the circular wrap jacket or top; and the two-piece empire-waisted top or dress.
Suitable for advanced sewers and very adventurous high-intermediate sewers. Students should be comfortable following a range of patterns and constructing garments on their own.
Materials: Students will need to provide their own calico, thread, and fabric and notions for their finished garment.
