Know Your Fabrics
August 9, 2013 @ 6:00 pm - 8:30 pm
$60Friday evenings 9 & 16 August – two sessions
Know Your Fabrics is an indispensable class for any sewer who wants to advance their knowledge of fabric, and improve their sewing through better fabric choices. Which fabric is best for your project? Which are hard and easy to work with? How will fabric choice affect the sewing process, and how your project lasts? All these questions and more will be answered!
Learn the characteristics and benefits of the different fibres that fabrics are made from, from natural fibres like wool, silk, and linen, through to the processed natural fibres, such as rayon (or is that viscose?), and finally the synthetic fibres, such as polyester, nylon, and acrylic.
We’ll also look at fabric weaves, covering the four basic types (plain tabby weave, twill weave, satin weave, and knits) as well as their variants.
Finally, learn how to identify fibre types by feel and burn tests.
Suitable for all experience levels.
Materials: None, though students can bring their own fabric samples for identification.
Cost: $60
