Know Your Fabrics is an indispensable class for any sewer who wants to advance their knowledge of fabric, and improve their sewing through better fabric choices.
Which fabric is best for your project? Which are hard and easy to work with? How will fabric choice affect the sewing process, and how your project lasts? This class will answer all of these – and more.
Learn the characteristics and benefits of the different fibres that fabrics are made from, from natural fibres like wool, silk, and linen, through to the processed natural fibres, such as rayon (or is that viscose?), and finally the synthetic fibres, such as polyester, nylon, and acrylic.
We’ll also look at fabric weaves, covering the four basic types (plain tabby weave, twill weave, satin weave, and knits) as well as their variants.
Finally, learn how to identify fibre types by feel and burn tests.
Past students rave about this class, and how it has changed their perception of fabric, both for sewing and for wearing.
Suitable for all experience levels.
Materials: None, though students are encouraged to bring their own fabric samples for identification.
